Sago Pearls Dessert

This is one classic Malaysian dessert, eaten cold, sometime topped with shaven ice. Lovely till the last mouthful.

Roasted Pork Knuckle with Molasses and Fruits

My first time roasting pork knuckle like this. It turned out so well, that I would like to post it first before I forget the recipe. For those of you who loves pork knuckle in anyway, do take time to try out this yummy dish. I did not plan to roast it this way but since I had an abundance of fresh cherries, plums and green apples in my fridge, I decided to give it a try. Pork dishes goes really well with this type of fruits.

Honey Lemon Chicken Wings

A lot of our Malaysian dishes are full of oil, fats and unsaturated oil. What can I say, 'fat' does make food taste better but my new toy has managed to help me lessen the fat and oil content in my meat, thus giving me a great opportunity to cook my favourite dishes with a peace of mind. My new kitchen toy is a super-heated steam oven, that steams, grills, roasts and bakes. Eat healthy 5 days week and enjoy restaurant food on weekends!

Malaysian Oxtail Soup

Last night, was one night to remember, dinner at one of 'Kuala Lumpur's well-sought-after' home bakers' home. Food was deliciously wonderful and company was ex-ordinarily interesting. All guests were from very different walks of life with something in common 'the love of FOOD'. A lovely bunch of interesting new friends have just evolved right in front of my eyes and not to forget those I have met earlier this year. Last night was for keeps!

Braised Beef Shin

Here's my first pre-natal recipe that I can bring myself to cook is "Braised Beef Shin". Beef shin has a soft chewy texture after braising thus making it a nutritious energy providing dish for weak expectant mothers, which at the same time also helps strengthen ligaments and joints.

Simple Chinese Stir-Fry Vegetables

I am not my usual self these 2 weeks but hopefully will be back on my cooking schedule soon. I should be getting sick of all the take-outs and restaurant food in due time. Took a short break to Penang right before the school holidays last week. I must have eaten almost everything I could get my hands on, from my all-time favourite shellfish the "Balitong" to the real "Penang curry mee". We tried this new restaurant at Gurney Drive, which is NOT difficult to find called "Bali Hai". It is well stock with live seafood from snow crabs, spider crabs, lobsters, geoducks and you-name-it shellfish, they've got it. Really fresh stuff! I must say.

Braised Pig Trotter with Dong Quai

This appetizing 'braise' has been nagging me since Chinese New Year when one of my sister-in-law bought an almost similar dish to reunion dinner this year. Labled in my mind as very rich in fats and flavour dish, I conveniently shoved it to the back of my mind but the craving seems to have won over the very weak mind lately.

Wonton Skin Soup

Wonton is a well-known food enjoyed by people all around the world. Made popular by the Chinese, wonton can be savoured as a deep-fried crispy appetizer or as fusion tapas, blanche in soups and even as a dish itself in Dim Sum. The skin is usually use as a wrap but this time, I am eating it as a noodle in tasty home-made soup. It's lovely either way.

Tom Yum Goong (Prawn Tom Yum)

This morning was perfect for my Tom Yum adventure in my kitchen. Sis took Mom to the Sungai Buloh plant nursery, hubby at work, daughter in playschool and I was in my darling kitchen enjoying my private time making Tom Yum Goong. Pure satisfaction! No interruptions, no phone calls, no renovation next door, just blissfully doing my stuffs. Don't get me wrong, I totally enjoy family and friends but sometimes, time set aside just for myself is also very important for my self rejuvenation.

Thot Man Pla (Thai Fish Cakes)

I will be making some non-spicy fish cakes followed closely with some spicy Thai ones. This way both young and old get to enjoy fish cakes of their choice. Keep in mind, this is not a very simple recipe. It takes a little more time to prepare then my usual stuffs I churn out daily but then again, it is worth every effort. That is why I make it in bulk, fish paste has many uses and can be stored refrigerated in an airtight container for a few days.

Steamed Sea Prawns in Chinese Wine

In other parts of the world large sea prawns are called shrimps but strange enough I grew up thinking shrimps are the tiny baby prawns used to make "hae bee" (small tiny dried prawns). Anyway, whatever name you wish to call them, prawns or shrimps doesn't make a difference to their taste. As long as they taste good, you can call them anything you wish.

Black Bean Fish Soup

Frankly speaking, I have never tried making this soup in fear it tastes fishy and intolerable. Maybe after a month of fish related dishes in my diet, I decided to be brave and try it out. I have had this recipe for quite a while but there was always a better alternative soup to brew which the bottom line says "non-fish base".

Twice-Cooked Fish Head

I guess you know by now, I am very selective of my fish dishes. Here's a dish I would highly recommend to all my readers who don't have a love affair with fish dishes. This is my mom's favourite twice-cooked fish recipe. You may use other small fishes like baby ma-yaw but for the authentic style recipe, we love to use fish head pieces. I usually settle for a fairly large sek-pan head or even a ma-yaw head. The stomach side of the big fish is also quite good for this recipe because it has the fish oil factor and the smooth texture.

Black Bean Chicken Soup

Chicken soup is universally known as a "get well" soup. There are so many ways to make chicken soup. Today, I shall highlight a very nutritious soup called "Black Bean Chicken Soup". This soup is widely brewed for new mothers in confinement. 'Confinement' here means a period of time a new mother rests and replenishes her body with herbal vitamins which is believed to assist in getting her body back to good health after childbirth. During confinement, skinless black chicken is preferred but as for daily consumption, chicken breast or a small free-range skinless chicken can be used.
