Wholemeal French Toast

8 slices of wholemeal bread cut into half.
3 fresh low cholesterol eggs
50 ml fresh milk
20 ml filtered boiled water
Brown organic sugar
Olive oil
  1. Heat a non-stick frying pan and drizzle in some olive oil.
  2. Mix the slightly beaten eggs together with milk and water. Whip vigorously with a fork. Set aside.
  3. Dunk the bread into the egg mixture until it is evenly coated on both sides.
  4. Quickly place the bread on the hot pan. Repeat until pan has no more space left for another slice of bread. (Usually 3 – 4 slices) Turn bread over when the bottom side is slightly brown. When both sides are golden brown (golden brown does not mean burnt!) Lower down the heat and sprinkle sugar on both sides of the bread. Flipping them from side to side and quickly take them off the heat. (slightly tricky here … practice makes perfect!)
  5. Wipe away the oil and sugar left in the pan with kitchen paper towels and repeat the process all over again.
  6. There are many ways to prepare “French Toast” but I like mine with enough egg mixture and evenly coated with melted sugar. I always thought it was worth all the trouble.

    wow, grapeseed oil and organic brown sugar. is that something for the health conscious? =) so what difference does it make when u use grapeseed vs other kind of oils?

    Evan, I have been using olive oil in my cooking for the past 6 years and recently changed to grapeseed oil mainly cos, the latter has a neutral flavour n naturally enhances the flavours of other ingredients. It’s not greasy n extremely stable even when baked (no smoke)n can take temp. up to 251 degree celsius. Also very high antioxidant content. blah, blah, blah ……

    yeah… was curious about the properties of grapeseed oil as well. Does it cost more than olive oil? I use rice bran oil by Greenlove which also has a neutral flavour, less smoke etc yalah blah blah blah

    Well Sam, grapeseed oil is conparatively cheaper than the usual olive oil we get off the shelves, Rm 29.90 for 1 ltr and I get from Just Life organic shop with a 10% discount. Occassionally, on birthdays or special promo days they give a whole 20% disc. Olive oil has recently gone up in price approx Rm32.00 above for a litre. Is rice bran oil ideal for high temp cooking as well?

    nice… one of my boiboi fave breakie. usually i cut down on sugar and serve them with a dollop of kaya. for boiboi, i will place a slice of cheese in between two slices of bread before dipping into the batter.
