  Salad, Appetizer and Soups

Honey Baked Ham and Mozarella Cheese Starter

app1

I hosted a casual dinner get-together for some family members just the other day. Since all of us were so busy with our tight schedules, we hardly had any time to meet up. Since everyone had to eat sometime or another, what could be a better time than Dinner.

Kiam Hu Kut Th’ng (Salted Fish Bones Soup)

kht1

A typical Penang Hokkien soup with salted fish bones and soft silken tofu that is bound to wet your appetite.

Tomato Salad

Took a rather long stroll in a supermarket sometime last month, something I don’t think I can achieve right now, not with my protruding belly and my ducky waddle. I had a relaxing time browsing over the fresh vegetables section. Tomatoes literally caught my eyes, they were in so many hues of colours and sizes, deep red, yellows, greens etc. You describe it and they might probably have it. So, I carted some tiny round organic ones, some oval yellow ones, 2 big juicy green ones, 2 big red tomatoes and some sprigs of fresh thyme.

Malaysian Oxtail Soup

Last night, was one night to remember, dinner at one of ‘Kuala Lumpur’s well-sought-after’ home bakers’ home. Food was deliciously wonderful and company was ex-ordinarily interesting. All guests were from very different walks of life with something in common ‘the love of FOOD’. A lovely bunch of interesting new friends have just evolved right in front of my eyes and not to forget those I have met earlier this year. Last night was for keeps!

Hairy Marrow Soup

This is my daughter’s all time favourite soup, easy to brew and delicious till the last drop. I have a few variation for this soup. I have one with pork balls and glass noodles in my family food post dated March 8th, 2006. You might have to scroll down a little after clicking family food to see the recipe.

Wonton Skin Soup

wanton-skin-sp.jpg

Wonton is a well-known food enjoyed by people all around the world. Made popular by the Chinese, wonton can be savoured as a deep-fried crispy appetizer or as fusion tapas, blanche in soups and even as a dish itself in Dim Sum. The skin is usually use as a wrap but this time, I am eating it as a noodle in tasty home-made soup. It’s lovely either way.

Black Bean Fish Soup

bbfish-soup.jpg

Frankly speaking, I have never tried making this soup in fear it tastes fishy and intolerable. Maybe after a month of fish related dishes in my diet, I decided to be brave and try it out. I have had this recipe for quite a while but there was always a better alternative soup to brew which the bottom line says “non-fish base”.

Black Bean Chicken Soup

blackbean2.jpg

Chicken soup is universally known as a “get well” soup. There are so many ways to make chicken soup. Today, I shall highlight a very nutritious soup called “Black Bean Chicken Soup”. This soup is widely brewed for new mothers in confinement. ‘Confinement’ here means a period of time a new mother rests and replenishes her body with herbal vitamins which is believed to assist in getting her body back to good health after childbirth. During confinement, skinless black chicken is preferred but as for daily consumption, chicken breast or a small free-range skinless chicken can be used.

Salted Mustard Cabbage Duck Soup (Kiam Chai Ark)

duck soup

This is a ‘must have’ traditional soup during Chinese New Year reunion dinner. I grew up with this delicious mouth-watering soup. The moment my mom makes this yummy soup, my sister and I will not stop hounding her “Is it ready?”, ” when are we having dinner?”, “we are hungry already?” This shows how well [...]

Masak Titik

Ask me how this soup got its name, sorry to disappoint, my answer is I don’t know. For those of you who know, please give me some feedback. Frankly speaking, some use watermelon skin for this delicacy but as for me, I grew up drinking this soup made from wintermelon.
